At the Academy, cadets hit the ground
running – literally. You'll receive a suggested training program
in your application package, but here are some helpful tips:
- To meet the physical demands of Academy life, develop your fitness
by participating in individual and team sports or an individual
fitness program.
- Upper-body strength, running speed and endurance should be
your objectives.
- Because of the Academy's high elevation (7,250 feet above sea
level) your endurance will be diminished. Adjustment is much easier
if you've achieved an extremely high level of physical fitness
(especially cardiovascular) before you arrive.
- You’ll also take aquatic classes while at the Academy,
so if you don’t already know how to swim, you need to learn.
Satisfactory completion of the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA),
a test of strength, agility, speed and endurance, is required for
admission to any service academy The results of this test are important
in the overall assessment of your admission file, so you should
become familiar with the six events in the CFA and practice them
to score well. Although the CFA is Pass-Fail, it is imperative that
you perform to the best of your ability on each event.
Recommended Activities
To prepare for the CFA and the intense physical demands of your
BCT summer, you can build your strength and endurance through the
following activities:
- Rigorous team sports such as basketball and football
- Strenuous individual sports such as swimming and wrestling
- Distance running and conditioning exercises
Develop a Program
Physical activities can be tiring and discouraging if you're not
in shape, so establish a regular daily workout program and stick
to it faithfully.
Women
Women participate in the same strenuous programs as men and should
include exercises to increase upper-body strength in their preparation
program. They must be able to do at least one pull-up and should
strive for more.
